Entry for October 06, 2006
From the Back Cover of Ken Klein's book
This is a darn good read!
Klein has captured the essence of Thailand and transformed it into words.
He makes you feel like you are there, right there;
I could feel the heat mixed into the breeze and hear the rooster.
He's got the juice!
John Webster, Canada
Klein draws us into a world of clairvoyants,
enterprising Bangkok bargirls, colorful ex-pats,
and intricate family relationships that comprise his sometimes puzzling,
often crazy, and always fascinating life in Thailand.
His sharp insights into his American roots highlight profound cultural differences between East and West,
while his vividly realized evocation of the sights, sounds,
and tastes of Thailand leave us longing to experience first-hand
the sensuous pleasure of a Thai foot massage, the taste of a papaya salad,
and the carefree delight of bobbing in the warm waves of the Gulf of Siam.
Hollis G. Zelinsky, Author of
Indra's Net: A Sonnet Sequence
Excerpt:
An eerie howl knifes through the night.
The neighborhood dogs go crazy.
I had not yet turned-in, nor had my wife.
I had heard ghost stories from the village,
but this noise alarmed no one.
An hour later, unable to sleep while the others had fallen off,
there were three distinct knocks in succession
against the tin gate that encloses the compound…
The knocks are unmistakable.
The dogs go wild again, barking and growling.
Nobody else seems to hear.
I consider waking my wife, but there is no further noise.
The wails of the dogs stop in unison, suddenly, as if on cue.
I wonder what the hell I am doing here…
…I once heard it said that when you come to the realization that everyone is crazy,
then the mystery is solved and life stands explained.
My craziness is not manifest in a way in which it interferes with others.
After that, not too many people really care what you do with your life.
I think that there is no sane path to follow, and so, I do what I want.
